Champ Comes to Class!
This week I was able to bring a bottle baby goat, Champ, from my house into to class for the week, which was an awesome opportunity for my animal science class to learn hands on.
I always have talked about how I want to create hands-on opportunities for my students to get real life experience and I was able to do that. We went away from my unit plan somewhat and the students just got to learn. This goat had issues with breathing and his front legs so students had to brainstorm how to fix this and take care of this. We are between animal health and physical exams units so this fit in pretty well.
The students decided to try and splint his legs and we also practiced giving shots and taking vital signs. Along with this I made students take records of everything we did to Champ which was perfect for talking about keeping records. It is a lot easier to talk about how to keep records and why that would be important while the goat is right in front of you.
I hope as I continue to grow as a teacher that I am able to create unique learning opportunities like this for my students to learn and get out of their comfort zones.
This week we also had pop up club for middle schoolers which is were they came up and the FFA officers lead them through activities. It was an awesome opportunity to see my officers lead the younger students and also share why they should join FFA. This activity is something I would like to use in my future chapter because it is a good recruitment tool and helps the FFA officers build their leadership skills.
FFA fun night was also this week where we played dodgeball and ate pizza. It was just a good time to have to take break and just have some fun. We ended up inviting all students not just FFA members which was a lot of fun to see students from all over the school come and hang out and see what FFA is all about. I do think there should be some activities that are just for FFA members but I also think there is a need to involved all students sometimes.
It was another busy week, but week 11 is complete!
It was great to see the hands-on practical opportunity that you provided to your students with the goat. These experiences are ones that they learn from and will remember for a long time. Great job on sharing the fun night with everyone… great recruitment opportunity, too! I look forward to my upcoming visit!
