SAE visit to the Vet Clinic
I was able to visit Courtney at one of her SAE projects. She is a Sophomore this year and an FFA officer. Her career goals are currently to become a large animal vet. She is not enrolled in an ag classes this year due to her high level of science classes, but she is enrolled in an independent study for SAE.
She has multiple SAEs but the one we visited was where she works at a local vet clinic. She is a vet tech assistant essentially. The clinic was Friends for Life Vet Clinic. There they focus on mainly cats and dogs, all pets, and they have no large animals.
During the visit, Courtney showed us a tour of the clinic. She took us through the different exams room, kennels, surgical areas and discussed how things were organized and ran at the clinic. Courtney works along side the vet and vet techs to help make sure area is cleaned, tools and supplies are organized, and animals are taken care of. Unfortunately, due to insurance reasons, she can not assist with any surgeries or procedures hands on, but is able to assist by getting necessary tools and supplies and watch as well. She also takes care of handling animals that have been put down and knows all the proper protocols. Along with those skills she has been able to build her client relation skills as well.
As far recommendations, Courtney does a really good at the office. We were even able to meet with the vet there and check in, where she also had positives things to say. The only things that we recommended was for her to check out a vet for large animals and for her to continue to ask questions when she is unsure.
As far as grading SAEs go, AET is the main source of that grade, checking for updated records and journals. While we were there we also filled out an SAE visit form highlighting recommendations and skills learned. This form also included a pre-visit section where we filled in information from AET and showed what needed to be updated. With that we made sure to remind her to keep her journals up to date.
Overall, this was a great and very positive visit, where I was able to learn more about the vet clinic too!
