Bunny Breedings, All things food, and A Whole Bunch of Plants

In honor of Valentine's day this week, we tried to mate our temporary class pet, Hippity Hop, the rabbit. Our first breeding was unsuccessful, however, we brought in another buck and we are pretty confident that it worked but we will see in about month. I am super excited to see what happens and so are the students. We had just finished our reproduction unit and now we are onto genetics, so this was a perfect way for the students to see the content in real time. I also had the students guess due date, litter size, and offspring colors where they used the information we had been learning in class. 

Also, this week in my intro class we dove into our food science unit. We had discussion based classes all around food waste, consumer demand, and food security. It was really cool to let the students led where we were going while just facilitating and of course, adding in definitions and information here and there. The students started to think about global issues and really divided into why is this happening and how could we fix it. I hope that I can continue to get students thinking about current issues and how they affect the local area and the globe. 

On Thursday afternoon, over 900 plugs arrived for us to transplant in the greenhouse. So Friday morning we transplanted the plants. It went smooth and my CT does a very good job of keeping high expectations in the greenhouse. Thinking about running my own classroom, how can I set up classes with high expectations that last through the year? What are some of the best tips with managing a greenhouse?

Overall, it was a long, but good week filled with learning and growing for my students and me. Week 6 is in the books!

    I think students respect and will meet high expectations in all areas of your program as long as long as they know them. Also, the students need to know that you will be fair In administering any consequences that are necessary. So, be sure to be consistent.
